Three strategies for avoiding burnout at work

I quit teaching after 10 years. After about a year and a half of working a 9-5 job, I was ready to go back, but it took an additional year to find the right school for me. My first year back, I spent most of the school year commuting almost 3 hours roundtrip. By the end of May, I was a frazzled mess. My goal this school year is to put myself first and avoid burnout. How am I doing that?   Strategy 1 – Leave work at work Teachers are notorious for grading and lesson planning at home. Since my school went 1:1 this year, I do spend a fair…

How do you make friends as a 40ish adult?

One thing I have struggled with over the past few years is making new friends. It is not any easier once you move to a town where you know hardly anyone. In the past, many of my adult friendships started at work, but I don’t live very close to my current job, and the pool of potential friends there is small. Unless someone starts a friend delivery service, I have to put myself out there if I want to meet new people. That is very uncomfortable for me as I am extremely shy. I know that I cannot be alone in this struggle, so I’m issuing a challenge to myself…

A trip to the Greek Festival

We went to the Roanoke Greek Festival on Sunday and I managed to only take one picture to share. And it is a bad one, but here it is. #blogfail We shared pastichio, moussaka, souvlaki, spanokopita, tiropita, galaktoboureko, and we carted home an assortment of pastries for later. Of the savory dishes, my favorite was the pastichio, and all of the pastries were wonderful. People also had the option of driving through and just picking up food! I thought that was a bit different. If you aren’t familiar with those dishes, I’ll share my thoughts and identify them in the bad picture. The pastichio and moussaka are very similar looking…

The deodorant that changed my life

I know this is not about an adventure, and deodorant is usually pretty boring. I recently found this product and thought I would share because it really has changed my life. The Problem I have really sensitive underarms. They cause me all kinds of grief. Several years ago this manifested as a string of infections. In response, I tried a couple of natural deodorants, but they just didn’t work for me. I have, until recently, been able to cope by shaving less and not wearing deodorant/antiperspirant on the weekends. About a month ago the underarm sensitivity flared up again. This time in the form of a painful, itchy rash. I…

What on Earth is the Liebster Award?

I started this blog about a month ago as a hobby, and on Tuesday found out someone liked it enough to nominate it for the Liebster Award. Of course, I had no idea what the Liebster award was. So what’s the Liebster Award? It is an award given by bloggers to newbie bloggers, and really just serves as a way to get to know different blogs. There are rules. Many versions. I am using the ones here. The Liebster Award doesn’t come with any monetary prize, so it won’t help fund any adventures. Sadly. Some people liken this award to a chain letter (Am I showing my age by using that…
