    A gaudy, gaudy Christmas

I occasionally get the urge to be crafty. This is usually unfortunate as my crafting skills are mediocre at best. The urge struck this week, and I headed to the local craft store wanting to make some jewelry. I didn’t see anything I wanted though until inspiration struck. I had been planning on getting a fresh Christmas wreath for our front door. The craft store had some items on sale that I thought I could use to decorate a wreath. Instead, I decided to make one; a gaudy one. I have had a lifelong love for gaudy, tacky Christmas lights and decorations. If it hurts your eyes to look at it, I…

YES, you can go camping by yourself

I was recently chatting with a friend when she said something that really struck me. She said that she wanted to go camping very badly, but her boyfriend didn’t want to. I asked her why she didn’t just go by herself, and her response was, “I never thought about that.” My message for everyone, but especially women is, YES, you can go camping by yourself. Disclaimer – While I enjoy camping by myself, I don’t do it very often. I’ve been blessed with a lifetime of people who love camping too so I’m hardly ever alone. I do not profess to be an expert. I know some people look down…

You should consider a night race

Have you ever considered running a night race? You should. At 1:50 this morning, I ran in my first race since 2015. Yes, you read that correctly, 1:50 am. I knew when I started running again back in September, that signing up for a race wouldn’t be far behind, but I wanted it to be a special race. When I heard about the Time Traveler Pi-miler race, I couldn’t resist. The race coincides with the time change, so the hook is that you will finish before you start. That is cool, but the draw for me is running in the dark. My first experience with running in the dark was…

    Roanoke Food Adventures

I try to look for local mini-adventures that don’t require us to spend a lot of money or take off time from work to do since our weekends are filled with lesson planning and grading. Facebook is a great source for these mini-adventures, and thanks to Facebook the Roanoke Jewish Food Festival has been on my calendar for weeks. The Jewish Food Festival Experience We got there about 30 minutes after it started and lucked out on parking, but the line to get in was wrapped around the building and snaked through the parking lot. After about 45 minutes we made it to the room where the food was being served,…

A Stop on the Saucony Run Your World Event.

Last night I went to the Saucony Run Your World Event that I mentioned a couple of weeks ago. It was a nice little mid-week adventure break in a hectic week at school.   The event started with a workout with a local gym. It consisted of bodyweight exercises that reminded me how out of shape I am, but it was fun. The workout, coupled with a day of sitting thanks to professional development, made every muscle south of my neck sore today. After the workout, I grabbed a cider and headed to the paint bar. As you can see, I’m not the most artistic, but it was fun to…
